John Boyden, the renowned publisher and gallery owner conceived of this collection in 1786 at a dinner at his home in London. His crowning achievement, the Shakespeare project, occupied the last two decades of his life. His efforts facilitated the development of the British School of History Painting. Acclaimed as highly accurate, Boydell's Shakespeare edition generated great public attention.
